Biography or History:
The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Program fosters the examination of women and gender through an interdisciplinary lens. The Center for Women’s Studies was founded in 1974. In its early years, the center’s primary goal was raising funds for a displaced homemaker’s program. Over the next two decades the center earned several grants to support a conference on women’s issues and Women’s Studies into the U.S. History survey courses at UTA. In 1991, a formal Women’s Studies Program was created, offering an undergraduate minor in Women’s Studies. In addition to offering a minor, the Women’s Studies Program sponsored the Women’s History Month lecture series. In Fall 2011, the program officially changed the name to Women’s and Gender Studies Program. A graduate certificate program was also launched in 2014 in collaboration with several departments.
